BOTOX, a purified substance derived from the bacteria clostridium botulinum, is injected into the face to correct crow’s feet (lines around the eyes) and frown lines (on the forehead and between the eyebrows). When injected, BOTOX temporarily freezes muscle movement preventing you from being able to make those undesirable facial lines. By preventing facial lines from being made, BOTOX not only temporarily erases these lines, but can additionally help prevent them from worsening.
Botox is extremely safe. It is among the most popular cosmetic treatments worldwide and has been used to reduce the appearance of facial lines and wrinkles in millions of patients worldwide since 2002. In addition, BOTOX has been evaluated in more than 400 peer-reviewed articles in medical and scientific journals.
BOTOX injections take only minutes to perform and patients experience no downtime. The needles used to inject BOTOX are extremely small, so pain is not an issue, though patients who are sensitive or have a fear of needles can opt to have a topical anesthetic numbing cream applied 30 minutes prior to treatment. Results from BOTOX typically appear between 24 and 48 hours, and generally last up to four months. When treatment is stopped, frown lines and crow's feet eventually return to their original appearance.
While injected into facial lines like BOTOX, fillers work differently. Instead of freezing muscle movement, they temporarily plump up creases by binding with water molecules underneath the skin. Dr. Patel utilizes the most popular brands of hyaluronic acid fillers known as: Restylaneâ, Perlaneâ and Juvederm Ultra Plus. Hyaluronic acid is a substance naturally produced by the body, but like collagen, it decreases as we age. Hyaluronic fillers are the most popular form of fillers used today. They are effective in smoothing, creases and folds, especially around the nose and mouth. Benefits of Restylane and Perlane generally last up to six months, while Juvederm results can last up to two years.
